School closings expected in Floyd budget cuts (Courier-Journal)
New Albany Floyd County school leaders will announce a plan next week to plug a $6.6 million budget gap, and it’s likely to call for some school closings, a top administrator said Wednesday.

What, no local press release touting involvement in this? Curious.
I am concerned about the future of the only school in the NAFC system, which has achieved 4-star status for the past ten years. (http://www.news-tribune.net/schools/local_story_013212503.html) The financial difficulties facing our state and community are well known, and these deficits will only increase if we don’t address them in a timely fashion. However, I am concerned how these shortfalls will be addressed. Recently, the school board has been unusually reticent in providing any information regarding the future of Galena Elementary school. I hope with great sincerity that the school board reviews all the facts when considering the future of this school. The school board has the opportunity before them to demonstrate sound judgment by supporting their most decorated elementary school, while evaluating redistricting that could alleviate overcrowding at both Georgetown Elementary and Floyds Knobs Elementary.
I told my wife they might abandon Galena, despite the millions spent on it. If it's three schools, the Wiseheart/Gardenour bloc will close Silver Street, Pine View, and (I say) Galena, putting 40 kids in every classroom.
I'm still shocked no one is stepping forward to take credit. The whole idea is to lower taxes and reduce the size of government, right? This is victory. Step up and and say "I did this. We're winning!"
Break out the NO public schools signs. Write a column about how brave reformers have defeated that pesky teachers' union. Shoot, at this rate, a majority of kids will be in private schools in a few years and then we can dole out tax breaks to all the corporations. It'll be great when they pass that savings along to us on our sewer bills.

Of note, there was approximately $3 million in cuts at the end of last school year, resulting in teacher lay-offs and various program cuts.
They are going to close silver street, pine view, childrens academy and galena. There is also a very strong indication that all fifth graders will be sent to middle schools. Word will be out on Tuesday.
That's not closing. That's carnage.
Mitch Daniels has pledged over $1 billion in roads funding to Clark and Floyd Counties for years only to have very recently reneged on that promise.
You'll notice, of course, our local state representatives have become so used to the lies that they have nothing to say about that as they're now advocating for tolls without so much as blinking.
We should demand that money be spent in Clark and Floyd Counties as promised, but on schools instead of misguided transportation boondoggles.
Beats the heck out of supporting taking even more money away from public schools via tax breaks for private school vouchers, which is what our state house rep has been doing.
The really great part is that as more school employees hit the unemployment rolls, even more of our tax dollars will be exported out of state owing to Daniels' "reforming" of the unemployment system by contracting it out to a private company in Texas.
Unemployment in Indiana now creates and maintains jobs and tax revenue in Texas. Splendid thinking from the Blade. It'd be nice to have a state representative who'd point that out.

Let me get this straight... We have millions to spend on the athletics department and on pool repairs but no money for a physical education teacher for the 6th grade at Highland Hills. We also may not have enough money to keep a 4-star school like Galena Elem open. We did have enough money for our prior superintendent to drive a NAFC licensed Chev trailblazer, so we can afford "Company Cars". It would seem an audit is in order. By the way, how is the mold/asbestos laden admin building doing? We spent a lot to buy Northside Church as we had a crisis.... I don't want to hear about this account or that budget; It's all taxpayor money. I would think fewer schools would mean fewer administrators.
