It is so much easier to just say that things suck, work to make things suck and then say, "See, I told you things sucked".

You're right. Zero times nine is zero.
That at least some of them are considering mayoral runs having produced nothing particularly productive in multiple terms is not only a further waste of energy but a sure sign of lack of judgment and suitability for the job.
